Skates, John Ray. The Invasion of Japan: Alternative to the Bomb
Divergence: 1945 CE
Comments: More an analysis than a speculative what-if, but conclusions are drawn. Discusses the
U.S. plans for Operation Olympic (the invasion of southern Kyushu) and of Operation Coronet
(the invasion of the Kanto Plain near Tokyo), along with Ketsu-Go, the Japanese defense
plan. Also factored in are the political situation of the time, including the importance of
the term "unconditional surrender" and the need to end the war before mid-1946.
