Comments: Essay which argues that Gorbachev in effect used counterfactual arguments in trying to bring glasnost and perestroika to the Soviet system, the arguments being that Stalinism was an aberration and that if Lenin had lived on and Leninism properly applied, things would have been much different, and better. On the other hand, counterfactual arguments were applied by the Baltic republics that things would have been much better for them outside the Soviet Union, so that's where they should be.
